Welcome to the Department of Hematology
Department Introduction
The Hematology Department of Kerman University of Medical Sciences was established in 2014 and officially began its activities by accepting the first course of master's students in the field of laboratory hematology and blood banking. Currently, this department benefits from relatively good laboratory facilities such as a hematology laboratory and blood bank, a cell culture laboratory, and a molecular genetics laboratory. The presence of young and motivated scientific staff is one of the characteristics of the Hematology Department of Kerman University. In addition to educational and research activities, this department has also launched a diagnostic panel for hemolytic anemias, helping the clinical department and has been considered as one of the reference centers for diagnosing anemias.
Introduction to the field
The field of hematology studies the process of blood formation, blood cells, blood coagulation, as well as the preparation and transfusion of healthy blood and blood products to patients. This science examines the structure and function of blood cells, blood cell precursors in the bone marrow, the chemical structure of plasma, the function of platelets and proteins involved in the coagulation system, in normal conditions and in related diseases. In addition, the preparation of healthy blood and blood products and their transfusion to people in need in the best and least complicated way possible are other areas in which this science intervenes. Hematology is closely related to various medical disciplines and basic sciences, including immunology, medical molecular genetics, and human genetics.
Since laboratory tests play an extremely important role in the diagnosis of blood diseases, and without performing specific hematology tests, it is practically impossible to make an accurate and correct diagnosis, and also in the treatment of such diseases, various blood products are required.
In order to provide the necessary human resources in the field of laboratory hematology and blood banking and to perform the necessary laboratory services for blood diseases, a master's degree course in laboratory hematology and blood banking is established in qualified universities. Also, considering the extensive scientific advances that have occurred in this branch of medical science, this field will be established to train expert researchers and specialists to conduct important and useful scientific research in the field of hematology.
The purpose of establishing the laboratory hematology and blood banking course is to train individuals who can, relying on the foundations of hematology and blood banking, acquire the necessary ability and skills to perform laboratory work to diagnose blood diseases, as well as to prepare blood and its products, and to gain familiarity with and mastery in the blood transfusion process.
Graduates of this field will serve in laboratories of medical and health centers to diagnose blood diseases, as well as in Iranian blood transfusion organizations in the field of preparing and using healthy blood and blood products,as well as blood transfusion. On the other hand, given the various specialized courses they take during their course, medical research centers are among other facilities in which these individuals can work.
One of the most important research fields for specialists in this field is research in the field of stem cells, because no department has the necessary ability to work in this field as good as specialists in this field.
