Welcome to the Department of Laboratory Sciences
Laboratory Sciences
Laboratory Sciences is a branch of medical sciences that is related to the laboratory analysis of blood, fluids, and tissues of the human body in order to diagnose disease, follow up on treatment, and maintain the health of individuals in society.
History of the Field and New Developments
This field, which was taught in universities around the world under the name of Medical Technology, was changed to Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) by the National Credentialing Agency in 1976, so this field currently exists under the names of Medical Laboratory Sciences or Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Most believe that the new name better describes the professional duties of those working in this field, who are called Clinical Laboratory Sciences Officers (MLSO).
In Iran, the undergraduate course in laboratory sciences was established in 1968 at the universities of Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Ahvaz, etc., and became an associate and non-consecutive bachelor's course after the Cultural Revolution.
In parallel with advances in medical sciences and the expansion of the range of diagnostic methods, laboratory equipment has also advanced greatly, so that today, practitioners in this field use highly accurate and sensitive electronic and automatic devices to perform various tests.
